App Store 'full of zombies' claim on Apple anniversary

Apple's App Store is populated by many "zombie" programs which get next-to-no downloads, new research suggests.
Figures seen by the BBC from tracking service Adeven indicate over two-thirds of apps in the store are barely ever installed by consumers.
However Apple has said that 90% of all apps in the marketplace - which is marking its five-year anniversary - are downloaded at least once a month.
Apple boss Tim Cook said the store had "fundamentally changed the world".
Speaking to app developers at the firm's recent developer's conference, the chief executive said: "Customers love the buying experience and they love your incredible apps. And they have now downloaded 50 billion apps.
"That's a lot of zeros and a truly staggering number."
'Very small'
But according to Adeven the size of the US firm's app store, which has about 900,000 products, has left many developers struggling to get noticed.
"579,001 apps out of a total of 888,856 apps in our database are zombies," the analytics firm said.
It defines zombies as apps which never appear in any of the thousands of charts published by Apple which are tracked on a daily basis. These cover different categories, price and other criteria for each country's version of the store.

PC sales see 'longest decline' in history

Global personal computer (PC) sales have fallen for the fifth quarter in a row, making it the "longest duration of decline" in history.
Worldwide PC shipments totalled 76 million units in the second quarter, a 10.9% drop from a year earlier, according to research firm Gartner.
PC sales have been hurt in recent years by the growing popularity of tablets.
Gartner said the introduction of low-cost tablets had further hurt PC sales, especially in emerging economies.
"In emerging markets, inexpensive tablets have become the first computing device for many people, who at best are deferring the purchase of a PC," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said in a statement.

German state fines Google for Street View data breach

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - A German privacy regulator has fined Google for illegally recording signals from Wifi networks while it was taking photographs for its Street View service.
Google's roving Street View vans picked up large amounts of personal data such as e-mails, passwords, photos and online chat protocols, said the commissioner for data protection and freedom of information in Hamburg city state, Johannes Caspar.
Caspar fined Google 145,000 euros ($189,700), close to the maximum of 150,000 euros allowed under his mandate but a drop in the ocean for the top search engine provider, which has a stock market value of around $260 billion.
"Cases like this make it clear that the sanctions provided for by the Federal Data Protection Act are totally inadequate for the punishment of such serious breaches of data protection," the commissioner said in a statement.
Google said it would not appeal the fine.
The history of the Nazi Gestapo and East Germany's Stasi secret police has left many Germans especially wary of invasions of privacy.
Google said it received more than 244,000 requests two years ago for it to delete their homes from Street View, which allows users to take virtual "walks" along streets using their computers.
Caspar said Google had confirmed that from 2008 until 2010 it not only took pictures of houses for Street View but also scanned wireless networks within range and stored the data.
Google has deleted the data it collected, the regulator said in its statement.
"This is one of the most serious cases of violation of data protection regulations that have come to light so far," Caspar said.
He said Google had told him it had never intended to store personal data.
"But the fact that this nevertheless happened over such a long period of time, and to the wide extent we have established, allows for only one conclusion: that the company's internal control mechanisms failed seriously," said Caspar.
Google's global privacy counsel, Peter Fleischer, said in a statement that the project leaders never wanted the collected data, that they did not use it or even look at it.
"We work hard to get privacy right at Google," he said. "But in this case we didn't, which is why we quickly tightened up our systems to address the issue."
Last year, Caspar investigated Facebook's policies on retaining and deleting data and the level of control users have over their information. The probe was closed this year after Facebook changed its policies.

Israel's Babylon in 4-year Internet deal with Yahoo

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israeli translation software provider Babylon has signed a four-year cooperation agreement with Yahoo Inc in the Internet sector, including on mobile devices.
According to the agreement, which can be extended beyond four years, the two companies will share in revenue from Internet advertising, Babylon said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Babylon's management estimates this agreement will have a substantial contribution to the company. At this stage management cannot assess the amount of this contribution," the statement said. A spokeswoman for the company declined to provide further details on the deal.

In 2012 Google was the main source of revenue for Babylon.
The company has said it expects strong revenue growth this year thanks to increased advertising income on the back of its plan to offer its latest product free of charge.
Babylon, which provides translation of words, phrases, documents and web pages in 77 languages, said 94 percent of its revenue comes from advertising.
Among the company's mobile applications is Babylon Touch, which allows users to point a camera at signs or menus and receive instant translations.
In November, Babylon filed for an initial public offering on Nasdaq, with the aim of raising up to $115 million this year.

Android Preparing to Take Over Tablet Segments, Beat iPad

In 2013 analysts expect 150 million tablets to be shipped globally, an increase of 38% compared to last year. Up until now and since 2010 Apple has been ruling the tablet segment, since the iPad was introduced, but Samsung and other slate makers have been biting out of its pie.

About 60% of 2012′s tablet shipments were iOS devices, while 37% were based on Google’s Android OS or versions of that, like the one served by Amazon on the Kindle Fire units. There are 3% left, that make up the rest of BlackBerry OS, Windows 7, 8 and RT slates, that pretty much don’t matter in the big picture. ABI Research analyst Jeff Orr is claiming that the “tide is definitely turning toward Android-based tablets”. This doesn’t mean that Apple will give up without a fight.
They’ve still got the iPad Mini 2 coming, the iPad 5 with its first major design change in the main iPad series and probably more goodies. Samsung is seen right now as the main Apple pursuer on the tablet market, which makes the IFA 2013 event all the more interesting, since it may mark the debut of Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Tab 3 devices, all of them with potential to become hits. It’s all about good strategy…
